Will Justin Herbert Drift for the NFL MVP?

Justin Herbert remains third favorite for the MVP in the NFL. However, the quarterback might be injured as fans await an update.

There is a lot that goes into being an MVP in the NFL but history has shown that MVPs in the league are typically quarterbacks. On top of that, they are normally quarterbacks of one of the best teams.

Currently, Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers is the third favorite for the MVP Award in the NFL (source: bet365's MVP odds). He is behind both Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. But following what happened on Thursday night, you have to think that Herbert's odds of 7 to 1 will drift soon.

Herbert's team lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday by a narrow margin, 27-24. That fact right there, that his team lost, will hurt Herbert's MVP chances a little: not only did he take a loss but one of his main competitors, Mahomes, gained a win.

Additionally, Herbert threw a critical interception that basically cost the Chargers the game. The MVP award is a subjective award that is voted on: making a critical mistake could make an impact on voters.

Is Justin Herbert Injured?

Perhaps most importantly, it's not perfectly clear if Herbert is healthy following the contest in Week 2. Herbert is "Questionable" as of Friday morning as per his ESPN profile: "Herbert underwent X-rays following Thursday's loss to the Chiefs, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports." As of Friday evening, he is day-to-day (ESPN's Lindsey Thiry).

Certainly, fans of the Chargers will be awaiting word on the status of their star QB. However, those interested in the MVP market and debate will be awaiting word too. It looks like this is a time to take one of the other favorites and Mahomes is currently our top pick for this award.
