American tennis player Coco Gauff will face Sachia Vickery at the 2024 WTA Stuttgart tennis tournament soon. Gauff is a very heavy favorite for this match, one that will be in the second round at the 2024 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. She is priced at -1400 (bet365) to win the match -- very tough odds to take for value bettors. Working with odds that short, bettors would have to right under these conditions 14 times out of 15 just to break even. I think this match is about looking at Vickery to see if she has any potential at +800 (bet365) or seeing if Gauff should be backed in handicap markets. On that note, my Gauff vs Vickery prediction is that the former player, Gauff, will win this match from a game-handicap perspective.

These two players have yet to face one another on the WTA Tour. Accordingly, the Gauff vs Vickery h2h is 0-0. Gauff enters the match as a heavy favorite partly in consideration of the rankings. She is ranked 3rd in the world while Vickery is way out in the 134th position at this time.

Coco Gauff's Recent Matches and Results

Gauff last played in Miami, where she went out to Caroline Garcia on March 25th. The American was in the Indian Wells event earlier in March, losing in that tournament's semifinals to Maria Sakkari. Gauff has been an important player on tour this season with her semifinal appearance at Roland Garros and her title from Auckland.

Last season on clay, she made the Roland Garros quarterfinals. However, she did not do that well in the smaller events that led to the French Open. She went 3-3 in Stuttgart, Madrid, and Rome combined.

Sachia Vickery's Recent Matches and Results

Vickery played in the qualifying draw this week. The main draw and quallies combined, she is 6-0 on sets played at the Stuttgart venue. In the last round, she was an underdog but took a win away from Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6, 7-5.

Vickery was also in Charleston a few weeks ago. She won a couple of matches in qualifying there as well. She is 5-1 in recent clay-court matches but the competition has been pretty light. Vickery does not have any kind of recent result that would suggest she's about to give the World No. 3 a run for her money.

Gauff vs Vickery Prediction: Gauff -6.5

I think the only thing moneyliners can do in this match is bet Vickery at +800 and hope that Gauff will not transition to clay well after playing on the hard-court surface since Roland Garros 2023. However, even that feels like a shot in the dark. A low-ranked opponent like Vickery is exactly what Gauff needs right now as she debuts on clay in 2024.

Last season, when Gauff played players ranked 100th or lower on tour on clay she put up these results:

  • 7-5, 6-2 vs Schmiedlova, 100th at the time of the match
  • 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 vs Andreeva, 143rd
  • 6-4, 6-1 vs Escorihuela, 318th

Gauff went 2-1 against a -6.5 games handicap against these three players. I would think that the odds of -138 to cover a -6.5 handicap are in the bettor's favor, accordingly. Gauff is known for being ruthless against the lower-ranked players. She frequently puts up sets at 2, 1 or love against her. A set like that against Vickery will put Gauff well on her way to covering her large handicap.

Vickery vs Gauff prediction: Draw at the 2024 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Qinwen Zhang is in this section of the draw. She could face the winner of the match between Vickery and Gauff. Zheng has looked sharp in her recent clay-court matches, beating Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-3.
