Jets extending Aaron Rodgers

As weird as this news sound, this is just a contract restructure with a pay reduction for the new QB

The new quarterback for the New York Jets hasn’t even debuted yet, but he already signed a contract extension. Aaron Rodgers is extending his contract with the Jets for the next two years, on a $75 million deal. This is actually just a formality to announce that the franchise is reworking the QB’s contract and giving him a pay cut.

Rodgers had nearly $110 million in guaranteed money remaining on his previous deal signed with Green Bay. But Rodgers is taking less money with New York. This move appears to also reiterate his stay with the Jets is likely to last beyond just this season. But the pay cut also indicates that he wants to win. By extending his contract with the Jets like that, Aaron Rodgers allows the club to spend money on other great players.

“The team gave up significant pieces for it to just be a one-year deal,” Rodgers said a few hours before the news of the contract circulated. “I’m aware of that. I think there was an awareness of that. Now, again, anything could happen with my body or the success that we have this year. But I’m having a blast, so I don't really see this as a one-year-and-done thing.”

After 18 years playing for the Green Bay Packers, the 39-year-old quarterback is moving to his second team in his career as he approaches retirement. And he’s had a hell of a career so far in the league.

During his 18 seasons played, he got selected 10x to the Pro Bowl, he was elected 4x the regular season MVP, won the Super Bowl XLV as the Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was also elected the MVP of that SB. He also holds the record for the most consecutive passes without an interception, with 402 attempts.

Rodgers played 230 games so far, completing 5,001 passes in 7,660 attempts (65.3%). He has 59,055 yards, 475 touchdowns and only 105 interceptions. The QB was never really a threat running with the ball but he also has great numbers with 719 carries, 3,466 yards and 35 TDs.
