The Indiana Pacers is a pro basketball team that plays in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference in the NBA – National Basketball Association. The Pacers play their home games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Pacers were originally founded in 1967 as a part of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and only joined the NBA when the two leagues merged in 1976. In total, the team has won nine Division Titles, one Conference Title and three Championships – but these were all ABA Championships rather than NBA Championships.
The Pacers have a number of Hall of Fame players: Alex English, 1997; Adrian Dantley, 2008; Gus Johnson, 2010; Chris Mullin, 2011; Mel Daniels, 2012; Reggie Miller, 2012 and Roger Brown, 2013. Their player, Rick Smits – The Dunking Dutchman, was also in the Tallest Players in the NBA Hall of Fame, standing at 7 ft 4
Indian Pacers 2021 NBA Draft Picks
So, what happened on 2021 NBA draft night? Well, the team had first-round pick number thirteen and selected Chris Duarte. They also had second round picks – number 54 which they picked Sandro Mamukelashvili and Georgios Kalaitzakis – who ended up being traded to the Bucks – instead they got the Kentucky big man Isaiah Jackson – Lakers first round draft number 22.
Thirteenth pick, Duarte is a 6ft 6 Guard, who shot 42.4% from a three-point range. After averaging 17.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG and 2.7 APG he was named Pac-12 Player of the Year and an All American. They also walked away with Isaiah Jackson in a trade. He is a 6ft 10 player from Pontiac, who turned Pro after having a freshman year scoring 54 percent shooting, 8.4 PPG, and 6.6 RPG in his 25 games.
How Will it Work?
Duarte might well make the rotation straight away according to Pacers Head Coach Rick Carlisle. He is practically a finished product and they are looking to get straight in the season in winning form. He is highly athletic and has length and speed – so he can do plenty at both ends. He is set to go in as one of the roster’s best athletes. Then there is Jackson who is a hard worker, a defensive anchor and the energetic player the Pacers need. Both bring very different types of play. Duarte is more of an immediate investment and while it may take Jackson longer to develop, he could well have the most future potential.

- First-round draft pick 13: Chris Duarte from Oregon
- First-round draft pick 22: Isaiah Jackson from Kentucky
Moving Forward as a Team
The team is going into the season with Warren harbouring a foot injury and no return date. Meanwhile, LeVert has suffered from a stress fracture in his back – and also no return date. As such, holdovers including Oshae Brisste, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb or even new player Chris Duarte could get more playing time. Their last regular-season result was disappointing – which meant they missed post-season playoffs. How they perform this year will depend on player health, and their defense. They will probably end up with a 41-41 season.
