Carolina Panthers 16 to 1 to win NFC South

Carolina Panthers betting odds to win their division. At 16 to 1, you would think the Panthers would be cooked -- but are they?

One thing that you have to say about the Carolina Panthers and their current season is that they have never really quit. They started making changes early in the season when they became the first club to sack its coach this season and fired Matt Rhule. Next, they stopped playing Baker Mayfield when they weren't getting the right results.

More recently, they went to QB3 Sam Darnold in an attempt to find some hope this season. The quarterback played well in Week 12 and Carolina is not out of contention yet.

The Pick: Carolina to win the NFC South at 16 to 1

Darnold had the kind of performance last week that you would easily accept from a backup QB. He was just 11 for 19 on passing but he had no interceptions in the game. That's a viable passing attack so long as Carolina remains steady on the ground. With D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard as running backs, the Panthers are good enough in a division that doesn't have an elite team.

Looking at the NFC South standings, the Panthers are in third place with a 4-8 record. It will be tough for them to get over the top of both Atlanta and Tampa. However, heading into Week 13, those teams each have just 5 wins.

Carolina's schedule helps them out

If you looked at Carolina's remaining schedule, then they have a bye week in Week 13 followed by a game against Seattle. Then it's Pittsburgh, Detroit, TB, and New Orleans. That's not a killer schedule, noting that Seattle has hit a slump. What you have to like about the Panthers' schedule, besides the fact that there is not an elite team in it, is the game against TB. That's a team that the Panthers are chasing. Playing against the Bucs gives Carolina a measure of control over its destiny.

The odds are a selling point on Carolina. They definitely should not be considered 16 to 1 to win their division at this point. The bye week could set them up to go on a run. They are looking more like about 13 to 2 at this point, making 16 to 1 a clear value bet.
