The Seattle Seahawks is the only NFL team in America’s Pacific Northwest. The Seahawks play in the NFC West division of the National Football Conference of the National Football League. They have been playing their home games in Seattle’s SoDo neighbourhood at Lumen Field (formerly known as Qwest Field and CenturyLink Field). It is a facility that the Seahawks have used since 2002, having moved there from the Husky Stadium. Before that time, the Seahawks used the Kingdome.
The club has been a part of the NFL since 1976 after it entered as an expansion team and between 1977 and 2001 played as a part of the AFC West. They became part of the NFC West division in 2002 after the league expansion and realignment.
The team was originally established in June 1974 but only played its first season in the league in 1976 where they debuted the Seattle Seahawks logo – a blue and green Osprey head based on Kwakwakaʼwakw art masks. The team is headquartered in the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, Renton, Washington. The current head coach is Pete Carroll, who led the team to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances near the start of his tenure.
All About The Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are known for gathering a really loyal following, with the Seattle Seahawks fans often referred to as the team’s 12th man, 12th fan, or 12s. In fact, the Seattle Seahawks fans have set the Guinness World Record for the loudest noise created by the crowd at any sporting event – twice. These records were both set within just a few months – the first time against the San Francisco 49ers in September 2013 where it registered 136.6 decibels, then against the New Orleans Saints in December that same year, with a noise measuring 137.6 decibels.
Because this is the only NFL team located in the Pacific Northwest region of the US, the Seattle Seahawks have garnered fans from a vast area, which even includes followers from Idaho, Utah, Alaska, Montana, and Oregon. Furthermore, NFL fans in western Canada are often partial to the Seattle Seahawks. For instance, the Seahawks’ logo is popular in the Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia, which is north of Seattle. Seattle is also popular on Vancouver Island as well as the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Canadian fans in eastern Canada or Manitoba have different geographical affiliations, such as the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills.

As part of the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks have won 3 conference championships and 10 division titles – and it is the only team that has played in both NFC and AFC Championship Games. They have also made it to three Super Bowls – their first effort saw them lose 21-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. With their second attempt, they defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 to win Super Bowl XLVIII. The third visit to Super Bowl XLIX saw another defeat, this time to the New England Patriots, 28-24. This latter game is often remembered for an in-the-end-zone interception that Russell Wilson threw late in the game. Many have questioned whether that should have been a running play due to the short yardage that Seattle required in order to score.
There have been several Seattle Seahawks players, including Walter Jones, Kenny Easley, Cortez Kennedy, Steve Hutchison, and Steve Largent who have made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame due to their accomplishments for the team. Moreover, players such as Dave Krieg, Curt Warner, Matt Hasselbeck, Dave Brown, Jim Zorn, and Dave Brown have also been inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor – alongside Head Coaches Mike Holmgren, Chuck Knox, and even Franchise owner Paul Allen and radio announcer Pete Gross.
Up until the end of the 2022/23 season, the Seahawks have accrued a record of 383-358-1. The team has also achieved a playoff record of 17-19, which includes a loss in the Wild Card round at the end of the 2022/23 season. It was a season where they were not expected to qualify for the playoffs.
In total, they have qualified for the playoffs twenty separate times. The Seahawks also became the first team in the history of the NFL to earn a playoff spot with a losing record (7-9) in 2010. This happened because, although they had a losing season, they still managed to win the NFC West division. They went on to beat the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card round – which was the reigning Super Bowl champion team at the time.
The team enjoyed their best success during the Russell Wilson era. When he left for the Denver Broncos prior to the 2022/23 NFL season, it was thought that Denver would improve while Seattle would struggle. One recent positive memory for Seahawks’ fans is that Seattle opened their 2022/23 season with a victory over Denver. It set the stage for Denver’s season-long struggles while Seattle made the playoffs. Heading into the 2023/24 season, the team is considered a peripheral contender.
Seattle Seahawks Main Rivalries
Here are the Seattle Seahawks’ main rivals in the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers
The Seattle Seahawks offense is always on full charge when playing against the 49ers. Between 2011 and 2014, these two teams were considered the two best in the NFC which developed into a very heated rivalry. The Head Coach of the 49ers at that time, Jim Harbough, had also had a personal history with the Seahawks Head Coach, Pete Carroll which started when Harbaugh coached at Stanford and Carroll was coach of the USC Trojans in NCAA football (ie. American college football).
At the start of the rivalry, it was the 49ers who were top dogs. They won the first three head to head games in 2011 and 2012. However, it was during 2012 that it began to change. That year, both teams clinched a playoff spot, but the 49ers made it all the way to the Super Bowl.
In the 2013 season, the Week 2 game saw the Seahawks beat the 49ers but Week 14 saw a turnaround and the 49ers came up trumps. However, the Seahawks got the last laugh when they beat the 49ers in the 2013 NFC Championship Game 23-17. The Seahawks, heading into the 2023/24 season lead the 49ers all-time, 30-20-0.
Los Angeles Rams
The rivalry between these two teams is certainly not one of the longest-running, having only been in existence since 2002 when the Seahawks joined the NFC West. They first played each other as divisional foes in 2004 when the Rams beat the Seahawks 27-20 in the NFC Wild Card round. However, their head-to-head series does go back to 1976. The rivalry deflated somewhat when the Rams struggled for form in the 2000s and 2010s. It is only in more recent years that it has started to regain some of its intensity.
A 2013 game saw some unsportsmanlike play between the Seahawks receiver, Golden Tate and the Rams’ cornerback Janoris Jenkins. Then, in 2015, the Rams’ kicker, Johnny Hekker pushed Seahawks’ defensive end, Cliff Avril and the Seahawks’ linesman attempted retaliation. After the Rams returned to LA in 2016 and achieved playoff success, the intensity of the rivalry increased.
It was only in 2018 that when playing at the Rams’ home stadium, the Rams player Aaron Donald was involved in an altercation with the Seahawks’ Justin Britt, which ended up involving different players and the Head Coaches ended up getting involved to stop it escalating even further.
In another Rams’ home game in 2019, another altercation occurred between Rams’ Jalen Ramsey and the Seahawks’ DK Metcalf. The tension escalated even further in 2020 after a close battle to win the NFC West division ended up with Seattle winning the NFC West title after beating the Rams in Week 15. They celebrated by smoking cigars and taunting the Rams. However, the Rams got their own back when facing the Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card match that season, and ended the Seahawks 10 season home game postseason winning streak, beating them 30-20.
In total, the Seahawks have won 27 head-t-head games compared to the Rams 25 wins. When the two team met last season, Seattle defeated the Rams 19-16 in overtime, a game that the Seahawks needed to win for playoff qualification. In essence, the Rams missed a golden opportunity to hand the Seahawks a damaging loss. Seattle and the Rams will open in Week 1 of the 2023/24 NFL season (September 10th, 2023). The two teams will also meet on November 19th, 2023.
The Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks have faced off against each other a number of times in the playoffs – which has become an intense rivalry. This includes numerous memorable moments – including the first time they met in 2003, where the Seahawks’ Quarterback player, Matt Hasselback lost the game by throwing a game-losing pick-six in overtime after guaranteeing a game-winning drive. Green Bay leads this series 15-9-0. As they are not divisional foes, the teams do not play every season, accounting for the limited head-to-heads between the two franchises.
