The San Francisco Forty-Niners franchise, more commonly known as the 49ers, is a professional American Football team (gridiron). They are based in the San Francisco area and are a part of the NFC West Division in the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The team plays its home games at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, which is a full 61km Southeast of San Francisco. They are also headquartered in Santa Clara at the Marie P. DeBartolo Sports Center. The greater area that the 49ers are based in includes three large cities: San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose.

The team, whose nickname references the Gold Rush of 1849, was originally established in June 1944. The 49ers were originally a part of the All-America Football Conference between 1946 and 1949 as part of the Western Division. In 1950 they moved over to the National Football League as a part of the NFC between 1950 and 1952 before moving to the Western Conference from 1953 until 1969. After the NFL/AFL merger in 1970, the 49ers joined the NFC as one of the NFL clubs in the NFC West division.

All About The San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers enjoyed significant success in the NFL in the 1980s and the 1990s. Between 1981 and 1994, the 49ers won the Super Bowl five times. Four wins came in the 1980s at a time when the team boasted several future Pro Football Hall of Famers. Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, Fred Dean, and Charles Haley led the 49ers during this era. Meanwhile, the coaching team of George Seifert and Bill Walsh were at the helm.

The team also won 21 division championships between 1970 and 2022, which makes them one of the most successful NFL clubs in the history of the league. The 49ers also have a playoff record of 37-24, which makes them one of the best teams in the NFL for playoff winning percentage.

Other records the 49ers hold include winning the most consecutive away games – 18, the most points scored by a team in one postseason – 131, and the most field goals in one season – 44. They have won the most games in one season at 18 (a shared record), plus the most touchdowns and points scored in a Super Bowl – 8 and 55 consecutively.

San Francisco 49ers Main Rivalries

The San Francisco 49ers main rivals:

The Los Angeles Rams

The 49ers and Los Angeles Rams rivalry is the stuff NFL legends are made of. This rivalry is considered by many to be one of the best in the sport. Even after the LA Rams relocated to St. Louis, the papers still declared that the Rams would always be the 49ers greatest rivals. This is, in part, because the LA Rams played the 49ers twice for more than 58 seasons. The 49ers lead this series 77-68-3 on head-to-heads, which includes a playoff win for Los Angeles en route to their Super Bowl title in 2021/22. The two teams will face each other on September 17th, 2023, and then again on January 7th, 2024, in the upcoming season.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers do not have an old rivalry. When the NFL realigned their divisions in 2002, the two teams began to play one another on a regular basis.

Their rivalry is not as intense as other rivalries, mainly because the teams tend to peak at different times, which means they aren’t usually playing at the top of their game at the same time. The rivalry became more intense in 2011 when Jim Harbaugh joined the 49ers from Stanford – as he and the Seahawks Coach – former USC Head Coach had a strong college rivalry. In total, The Seattle Seahawks lead the series 30-20-0. San Francisco won a playoff game between these two franchises in the 2022/23 NFL playoffs. In the upcoming season, the two teams will meet on November 23rd, 2023, and then again on December 10th, 2023.

Arizona Cardinals

Like the rivalry with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco's rivalry with the Arizona Cardinals took an injection due to the NFL's 2002 realignment. The San Francisco 49ers, heading into the 2023/24 NFL season, lead the series 34-29-0. The series includes two one-sided victories from the 2022/23 NFL season. The two franchises will meet on October 1st, 2023, and then again on December 17th, 2023.
