After trading away Derek Carr and Jarrett Stidham, Las Vegas knows who will be their next quarterback
The Las Vegas Raiders are signing Jimmy Garoppolo to be the next franchise quarterback. Garoppolo’s new contract is worth $72.75 million over the next three years, including $34 million guaranteed, as per insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero.
Jimmy G, 31, will meet again with his former offensive coordinator in New England, Josh McDaniels, currently Raiders’ head coach. Garoppolo spent three years being Tom Brady’s backup before moving to the 49ers, where he played the last six seasons.
This trade made clear the intentions of two teams for next season. First of all, the Raiders will bet on Garoppolo as their new leader as they traded away Derek Carr to the New Orleans Saints and Jarrett Stidham to the Denver Broncos. Second, it shows that the San Francisco 49ers will stay with Brock Purdy and Trey Lance to fight for the QB1 position.
With the no. 7 overall pick in the next draft, the Raiders were deciding between trading in a QB or drafting one. Now, it seems they can spend the pick with another need to make the roster better so the team can dream big next season.
Drafted in 2014 by the New England Patriots, with no. 62 overall pick in the second round, Garoppolo is in the NFL for nine years now. He spent the first three with the Patriots and the last six with the 49ers. Now, for his 10th season, he will play in Las Vegas.
During this time in the league, Jimmy G has played 74 games, most of them in San Francisco as he was Tom Brady’s backup in New England. He sums up 1,167 completions in 1,726 attempts (67.6%), 14,289 yards, 87 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. He also won two Super Bowl titles (XLIX and LI), both with the Pats.
