Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie confirmed last Tuesday, during the NFL Annual Owner’s Meeting, that the Kelly Green Jerseys are back in Philly. This means that one of the four uniforms the Eagles will have next season will feature the throwback style of the iconic uniforms worn by the team in the 80s and 90s.
“I'm super excited. I don't know what date that's going to be. The first moment we can get the Kelly Green helmet approved, we'll finally get to see it on the field", Lurie said. The “Kelly Green” uniforms are from the Randal Cunningham era, from 1985 to 1995. It refers to the tone of green worn by the team at that time, matching grey pants.
With the news, the Eagles fans will see the team wearing this combination for the first time in more than a decade. The last time the team played a game in these uniforms was in 2010. In Week 1 that season, versus the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1960 championship.
The Kelly Green was the official Eagles’ color until 1996 when Lurie decided to switch to the current “Midnight Green”. It has been the teams’ color for the past 26 years and now, for the second time since, they will play a game with their old color.
Uniforms rules in the NFL
Last season the NFL changes the rules for uniforms a little bit. The league allowed each team to have an alternate helmet, which allowed us to see the Bengals playing with white helmets, the Panthers, the Saints and the Eagles with black ones and even the Patriots and the Cowboys with throwback ones.
This year they are voting on allowing a third one. Besides that, each team is allowed up to four different jerseys and pants, which can be combined in any way they like. For the next season, the Eagles will have their home unis (midnight green), away unis (white), alternate unis (black) and the throwback unis (kelly green). And for the helmets, the midnight green and the kelly green ones. If the league allows a third one, then it will be the black.
