The running-back got the preference in the negotiations over former teammate Clyde Edwards-Helaire
The Kansas City Chiefs’ backfield last season used to alternate among three running backs. One of them, Jerick McKinnon, is re-signing with the Chiefs for another season. On the other hand, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is leaving as the franchise declined the fifth-year option on him.
McKinnon, 31, finished the 2022-23 NFL season with a clutch play in the Super Bowl LVII. With less than two minutes left in the game, the Chiefs and the Eagles were tied in 35 points. The RB then received a handoff from Patrick Mahomes on the 10-yard line.
Which football player has never dreamt of playing a Super Bowl? Or winning a Super Bowl. Or even better, scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl. But when McKinnon had that chance, he chose the win. Instead of entering the endzone and giving the ball back to the Eagles with more than a minute and a half in the clock, he slid.
Because of his choice, the Chiefs were able to manage the clock and give Harisson Butker the chance to kick the game-winner field goal. And that allowed the Chiefs to win the game because Jalen Hurts didn’t have enough time for a comeback.
The running back entered the NFL after the 2014 Draft, after being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 3rd-round, with the no. 96 overall pick, out of Georgia Southern. After four seasons with the Vikings, he moved to San Francisco in 2018. However, he would only debut for the 49ers in 2020, because of a torn ACL that ended his 2018 season and resulted in a second injury ending his 2019 season.
In 2021 he moved to Kansas City, joining the Chiefs. After playing two years with Patrick Mahomes and winning the Super Bowl LVII, he is coming back for at least one more season with the franchise. During his 9-year career (seven playing), he played 104 games. With 639 carries he records 2,590 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is also a threat receiving passes as he has 244 catches, 1,856 yards and 16 TDs.
