The Green Bay Packers lost again in Week 9. The result saw them fall to 3-6 on the season. They are out of first place by four wins and the Minnesota Vikings, at 7-1 on the season, are in firm control of the NFC North. The divisional title is effectively out of reach for Green Bay and their prospects of winning it cannot be seriously discussed without weeks of optimal results for the Packers changing the division’s outlook.

The Packers are clearly in heaps of trouble when it comes to making the postseason. They will face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10, a game that the Cowboys are favored in at -5.0 despite the fact that the Green Bay Packers will host the contest.

NFC’s Wild Card outlook

The NFC currently has two monster teams when it comes to the Wild Card standings. Each of the Cowboys and the New York Giants has six wins on the season to date. These two teams are both looking up at the Philadelphia Eagles in their division, an undefeated team at 8-0.

Heading into Week 10, the only playoff spot that Green Bay might hope for is the last one: the third Wild Card. Yet, the competition for the third and final Wild Card entry is a fierce one in the NFC.

The Packers could be one of the teams that enter the mix for the final Wild Card spot in the NFC. However, if they fall to 3-7 it won’t just get a little bit more difficult. With so many teams vying for the coveted spot, any lost game for Green Bay would make matters a lot more difficult.

How the Packers got to this point

The Packers have lost five straight games and some of the teams that they have lost to aren’t strong ones in the NFL this season. Detroit was in the running for the worst record in the NFL and they still are. However, their win in Week 9 over Green Bay improved them to 2-6 on the season.

The Packers are down in the 12th spot following Week 9. There is a lot that has to go right for this team if they are going to get into the playoff mix. Obviously, they need to win games but they are approaching a difficult point in their schedule. A trio of games against Dallas, Tennessee, and Philadelphia could spell doom for Green Bay. Those are teams with winning records that all made our most recent Top Ten NFL Power Rankings.

The Packers are 3-6 and you would expect them to be either 3-9 or 4-8 after the next set of games. There are some weaker opponents later in the schedule but the Packers also have Miami and Minnesota late in the season. With eight games to go, Green Bay has five tough games and three games where they might be in a coin toss at best. It certainly does not look good for Green Bay, a team that needs an aging quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, to pull a rabbit out of the hat to save the Packers’ season.
