The Portland Trail Blazers is an NBA basketball team that is based in Portland, Oregon. The team was founded in the 1970-71 season and currently plays in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association in the Northwest Division. Currently, they play their home games at the Moda Center, which is in the Rose Garden district of Portland. Previously, the arena was known as the Rose Garden Arena.

The Portland Trail Blazers have won the NBA title just one time. That was back in 1977, when they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 4-2. Bill Walton was on the team for Portland that season, a legendary figure in North American basketball. He was the finals MVP and the league MVP the following season. He remains an all-time great with the franchise.

Portland made the NBA Finals two more times after 1977. However, on each occasion they lost. In 1990, the Detroit Pistons defeated the Trail Blazers as part of their back-to-back titles. In 1992, the Chicago Bulls defeated Portland as part of the Bulls' dynasty in the 1990s. Clyde Drexler and Clifford Robinson were important players for Portland during this era.

Since the 1992 NBA Finals, the Portland Trail Blazers have done little in terms of earning banners. Significant playoff success has eluded the franchise for ages but they did rival with the LA Lakers at around the turn of the century. Portland has three regular-season division titles since 1992, giving them a total of six in franchise history.

Interesting Fact

High draft picks often turn a struggling franchise around. The Portland Trail Blazers had the top pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. They selected Greg Oden, which NBA enthusiasts will be quick to recognize as the player that's considered the biggest draft bust of all time. Oden, in an injury-filled tenure, only appeared in 105 NBA games, 82 of which were for the Blazers. It's fair to say that he didn't really turn the franchise around as they continued to struggle until Damian Lillard emerged as significant force.

The Blazers were also a formidable opponent for the Chicago Bulls back in the 1990s, when Chicago was starting its Jordan-era dynasty. The Trail Blazers lost to the Bulls in the 1992 NBA Finals. The series spawned a popular video game with the Nintendo video-game franchise called "Bulls versus Blazers and the NBA Playoffs." The game was played on the the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

The Portland Trail Blazers and the 2023 NBA Draft

The Portland Trail Blazers did not have a successful season in 2022/23. Accordingly, they were one of the franchises in the NBA that had a high pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. With the third pick overall, Portland selected Scoot Henderson, a player that was in the NBA G League. Portland also selected Kris Murray out of Iowa with the 23rd pick overall. Lastly, Portland had a second-round pick and with the 43rd pick overall, they took Rayan Rupert, a player that was with the New Zealand Breakers.

Portland Trail Blazers Season Preview for 2023/24

Whenever a team has a high draft there is always a question as to whether that pick will be a force during his rookie season, whether he will be a player that needs time to develop, or whether he will be a so-called "draft bust." If Scoot Henderson is NBA ready, then Portland will have an effective back-up point guard behind Damian Lillard. This actually calls into question the direction that the franchise will go and their future with Lillard. He's way too good to be a back-up himself: will Portland elect to give Henderson minutes over Lillard in the name of development? Or is Henderson only a bench player at this early stage of his career.

That the Trail Blazers have an asset that would fetch a high price in trading Lillard cannot be ignored heading into the 2023/24 season. Lillard has been in trade rumors ever since the June 22nd, 2023 NBA Draft. Fair conjecture on Portland is that will likely enter another rebuild. With Lillard's best basketball likely behind him, don't be surprised if the Trail Blazers are one of the worst teams in the NBA in the 2023/24 season.
