The New York Knicks – actually called the New York Knickerbockers as a pro-American basketball team that plays in the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team has its home venue at Madison Square Garden in the New York borough of Manhatten. They share the arena with the National Hockey League team the New York Rangers.
The Knicks are one of two NBA teams based in New York – with the other being the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks, along with the Boston Celtics, are the only two teams in the NBA that are still based in the city in which they were originally founded.
The Knickerbockers were originally founded back in 1946 by Ned Irish, and it was one of the original teams in the BAA – The Basketball Association of America, which would later become known as the NBA after its merger in 1949 with its rival… the NBL (The National Basketball League).
Even from the start, the Knicks was a successful team and could regularly be found in the playoffs, being led by Joe Lapchick – the team’s first head coach. Starting from 1950, the team even made the NBA finals for three years in a row (although they lost all three times). When Lapchick left in 1956, the franchise started to struggle.
The team only started to get back to their previous form in the late 1960s, when they signed Red Holzman in the position of Head Coach. After building up a stronger team, he successfully took the team to two NBA Championship titles, the first time in 1970 and the second in 1973. However, in the 1980s the team struggled to maintain form and although they managed six playoffs appearances, they never managed to reach the NBA finals in that time.
It was in the 1990s that the team was under the influence of Patrick Ewing, a future Hall of Famer. This was a season that saw some intense rivalries with the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers. The team was famed for its strong defense under the guidance of the two Head Coaches – Patt Riley and Jeff Van Gundy. They managed to get to the NBA finals twice in this era – in 1994 and 1999 but lost both times.
Since the naughties, the Knicks haven’t been quite the same and haven’t managed many successes. Having said that, in the 2012-13 regular season, they did manage to land the Atlantic Division title for the first time in 19 years, led by players such as Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. However, they failed to capitalize on this success and were knocked out of contention in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Indiana Pacers. After this, they didn’t even make the playoffs again until eight years later in the 2020-21 season.
The team’s full name is the New York Knickerbockers – and not after the famous dessert! It refers to two separate things. Firstly it’s named after the pants that were worn by the Dutch settlers. Also, this was used as the pseudonym of Washington Irving, the author of the book ‘A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty’.
New York Knicks 2021 NBA Draft Picks
The New York Knicks went into Thursday night’s NBA draft with four picks in total, which included the number 19 and 21 first-round selections. However, taking into account cash considerations, they played this tactically and ended up trading both of these selections and wound up with the 25th selection, with which they chose Quentin Grimes, a Guard from Houston. The Knicks traded their 19th spot to the Charlotte Hornets and in return, they will get a future first-round pick. The change from 21st to 25th pick will also get the team a future second-round pick.
By choosing Grimes, they are netting themselves a two-way guard. Last season he guided Houston to the final four and managed a very decent average of 17.8 points per game. He’s also a great defender. Having experienced three years of college basketball, which includes a freshman season at Kansas, he should be an excellent addition to the core New York team.
however, the team didn’t retire early. As the evening wore on, they traded their second-round pick number 32 for picks 34 and 36. With these selections, they netted Rokas Jokubaitis, a Guard from Lithuania and Miles McBride, a Point Guard from West Virginia. They also selected Jericho Sims from Texas with pick number 58.
How Will it Work?
Quentin Grimes: Last season, the Knicks boasted the third-best mark in the NBA with a 39.2% shot from long range. However, two sharpshooters – Alec Burks and Reggie Bullock are free agents so could leave. Grimes is a player that could plug a gap – after managing to hit 40.3% on 8.1 attempts for his college team last season. This player has star potential if he can work on his athleticism and he should be a great addition to a team looking to compete in the upcoming season
His long-term star potential may be limited by pedestrian athleticism, but Grimes is a high-floor type of player who should be able to contribute right away for a team expecting to compete.

Moving Forward as a Team
Times have been tough but the team is looking to build on its improvement last season. In March 2020 they named Leon Rose as President of the Knicks and this was swiftly followed by the appointment of Tom Thibodeau as Head Coach. This was the breakout season for Julius Randle and n February 2021 he was named as a reserve for the All-Star Game 2021. This success was topped off in May when they beat the Grizzlies to claim their first winning regular season for eight years. At the end of the season, the NBA named Randle the Most Improved Player and Tom Thibodeau was awarded the title NBA Coach of the Year. That season, however, they failed to capitalize on this and were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by the Atlanta Hawks.
In the upcoming season, they will be looking to step up even more. They have managed to keep hold of much of their talent from last season and added former All-Star player Kemba Walker plus Evan Fournier. They also extended Randle’s contract for another four years to secure him. If you add the talent that the team has in new boy Grimes, they could have a good season. Will they be contenders? Possibly not yet, but KNicks fans will certainly be expecting a lot this season.
