The New York Knickerbockers are a professional-basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). However, hardly anyone ever calls them the Knickerbockers. Very commonly, they are simply referred to as the New York Knicks. The team has its home venue at Madison Square Garden in the New York borough of Manhattan. They share the arena with a National Hockey League team, the New York Rangers. The venue is also host to numerous events throughout the year, including prominent college basketball games.

The Knicks are one of two NBA teams based in New York – with the other being the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks, along with the Boston Celtics, are the only two teams with deep historical roots (ie. not including the Toronto Raptors, who joined the NBA in the 1990s) in the NBA that are still based in the city in which they were originally founded.

Ned Irish original founded the team in 1946. He served as the team's president from its foundation until 1974. During his tenure, he was instrumental in establishing the Knicks as one of the premier franchises in the NBA. For example, the Knicks won their first NBA championship in 1970 with a roster featuring stars such as Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Bill Bradley. Irish also played a pivotal role in uniting the NBA and the American Basketball Association.

But even before their 1970 title, the Knicks were a successful franchise. They often made the playoffs in their early seasons. Starting from 1950, the team even made the NBA finals for three years in a row (although they lost all three times). But the team saw some struggling times in the late 1950s.

After building up a stronger team under Red Holzman, the Knicks won their aforementioned 1970 championship. The team would also win again in 1973, however, the franchise has not claimed a title since that season ended 50 years ago. In the 1980s the team struggled to maintain form and they never managed to reach the NBA finals in that decade.

It was in the 1990s when Patrick Ewing's stellar play started to make the Knicks serious contenders again. He was a future Hall of Famer. The Knicks, partly because of Ewing, were known as a very physical team. But this was also because of Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason, two players that were well known for their physicality. The Knicks entered the NBA Finals two times in the 1990s but lost each time. In 1994, they lost to the Houston Rockets in seven games. In 1999, they lost to the San Antonio Spurs at what was the start of the Tim Duncan era for that franchise.

There has not been much to speak of in terms of success for the Knicks since they lost in the 1999 NBA Finals. Having said that, in the 2012-13 regular season, they did manage to land the Atlantic Division title for the first time in 19 years, led by players such as Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. However, the Knicks failed to capitalize on this success and were knocked out of contention in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Indiana Pacers. After this, they didn’t even make the playoffs again until eight years later in the 2020-21 season.

Interesting Fact

The team’s full name is the New York Knickerbockers – and not after the famous dessert! It refers to two separate things. Firstly, it’s named after the pants that were worn by the Dutch settlers. Also, this was used as the pseudonym of Washington Irving, the author of the book ‘A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty’.

New York Knicks 2023 NBA Draft Picks

The 2023 NBA Draft was held on June 22nd, 2023. Although the New York area hosted the event, the Knicks were not active in the draft. The team had no selections to report on.

Moving Forward as a Team

The Knicks experienced some suprising success in the 2023/24 NBA season. They qualified for the playoffs and secured a five seed in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs but fell in the next round to the Miami Heat.

In general, times have been tough for the team in recent decades. However, the Knicks will be looking to build on their last season. The team named Leon Rose as President of the Knicks in March of 2020. This announcement was swiftly followed by the appointment of Tom Thibodeau as Head Coach. It could be that the recent success is partly due to the positive effects these individuals are having on the franchise.

In the upcoming season, they will be looking to step up even more, however, it may hurt them that they did not have a draft pick. Often NBA draft picks can be very effective, even in their first season -- and often a bargain for salary.
