There isn’t a team in the NBA that is more famous than the Los Angeles Lakers – the team generally supports by celebrities – and a team whose players rock the Met Gala year in year out. This is the team that has boasted legendary names such as Lebron James and Kobe Bryant – a team that is always trending on Social Media and one of the most successful teams in the NBA League.
The Los Angeles Lakers NBA Team famously has its home in Los Angeles, California, where it plays its home game at the Staples Center, which it shares with fellow NBA team Los Angeles Clippers. It plays for the Western Conference in the Pacific Division alongside the Los Angeles Clippers, the Phoenix Suns, the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings. This is one of the most successful teams in the history in the NBA League, having won the NBA Championship title 17 times – tied with the Boston Celtics.
The Los Angeles Lakers franchise history first hit the scene back in 1947 when they took over the disbanded team, the Detroit Gems, and NBL (National Basketball League) team. They initially started out in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers. As a part of the NBL, they won the 1948 championship before heading over to join the Basketball Association of America – where they won the championship five seasons out of the six seasons they were there. They relocated to Los Angeles for the 1960-61 season, rebranding as the Los Angeles Lakers (LA Lakers).
The Los Angeles Lakers made it to the NBA finals six times in the 1960s. However, every one of these times they lost out to their rivals, the Boston Celtics. It was when they signed four-time NBA Most Valuable Player, Wilt Chamberlain, in 1968 that they managed to win their first NBA Championship as the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving the fans at courtside thrilled!
Their second golden era came in the late 1970s – when Jerry Buss purchased the team. It was this move, along with the signing of Magic Johnson that led to success.
Along with Magic Johnson, the addition of Abdul Jabbar gave them a dynamic duo – and when Pat Riley joined as Head Coach in 1981, the team became the NBA powerhouse, winning games week after week. It earned itself the nickname of the Showtime Lakers because of its pure entertainment value. In nine years the team won five Championships – including several against arch-rivals, the Boston Celtics.
It suffered a drop in form when the two main players retired and it was only when the Lakers found two more superstars for sale – Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’ Neal in 1996 that they brought the team up to winning ways again – winning the NBA Championship for three consecutive years between 2000 and 2002. However, this era ended when the lakers traded O’Neal. The team traded for Pau Gasol and this saw the team head back to the Finals again and they won twice more in 2009-2010. Their most recent in was in 2020, when LeBron James, along with Anthony Davis, led the team to their 17th victory – tying them with the Celtics.
Now, the Los Angeles Lakers are the holders of the record for the NBA League’s longest winning streak – with 33 consecutive victories achieved in the 1971-71 season. They also boast 26 Hall of Famers and four Hall of Fame coaches. Four Lakers have won the NBA MVP award eight times in total.
2019–2021: The Los Angeles Lakers Today
On May 13, 2019, The Los Angeles Lakers named Frank Vogel as Head Coach and were in receipt of the fourth overall pick in that season’s NBA Draft Lottery. They then got Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelican in return for Ingram, Ball and Hart as well as three first-round draft picks.
After the 2019/20 NBA season was suspended, the Lakers were one of 22 teams that were invited into the NBA bubble in order to take part in the last eight regular-season games. They finished that season with an impressive 52-19 record and got into the playoffs for the first time in six years – seeded top for the first time in 9 years. They went through to the NBA Finals and beat Miami Heat 4-2 – which saw LeBron James named as MVP for the fourth time. This was their 17th win which brought them equal to the Celtics. The Primary Lakers owner, Jeanie Buss, who took the reigns in 2017 was the first female controlling owner of a team to ever win the NBA Finals!
In April 1984, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Lakers Center broke the NBA’s all-time career scoring mark when he recorded his 31,422nd point. It was a shot that came via his famous sky hook – and was assisted by none other than Magic Johnson. The point was scored from the right baseline and defeated the enormous stretch of Utah Jazz’s giant center, Mark Eaton, who stood above the rest at 7 ft 4. What’s more, this magical moment took place in Las Vegas, where Jazz often played home games.
Moving Forward as a Team
If you’ve started looking at the rosters this season, then you’ll be well aware that the team will be contenders from the beginning, with names including Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Anthony Davis looking to be four of the team’s starters. Although Ellington may not be as well recognised as the others, he has a 42.2% three-point touch which will make him scary.
The bench also boasts Rajon Rando, Marc Gasol and Dwight Howard – as well as Talon Horton-Tucker who showed sparks of brilliance last season. So, this is a second team that is almost every bit as capable as many other first-team players. LA Lakers will most definitely look for a big season with their ‘Showtime Lakers’ ready to put on a show.
