Nets vs Wizards recap for Saturday, February 4th, 2023. The Wizards (now 24-28 this season) lost to the Nets, who are now 32-20.
The Brooklyn Nets made news for the wrong reasons early on Saturday. The team announced that they would be sitting Kyrie Irving (pictured), reportedly for a sore calf. Irving recently asked to be traded so you have to wonder if he was being sat in order to avoid injury and preserve his market value in any prospective trade.
With neither Irving nor KD, the Nets hosted the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Brooklyn won the game in a contest that was close as time expired. They put up a single-possession margin of victory in the game, winning by 2 points. The final score was Washington 123, and Brooklyn 125 as the Nets received offense from a very unlikely source.
With the loss, the Wizards are now 24-28 overall on the season. The Wizards played the game without Bradley Beal and they aren’t a deep enough team to be going in without their top three players. They enjoyed a strong first quarter and nothing more.
Meanwhile, the Nets improved to 32-20 with the 2-point victory. The top scorer in the game was Cam Thomas, a 6’3″ shooting guard. He had a very impressive 44 points, a performance that will definitely turn some heads. Thomas is part of Brooklyn’s deep bench and he does not always get minutes in a game. However, the Nets just might have a diamond in the rough.
There are few players in the league that could come off of the bench and score 44 points. You have to think Brooklyn definitely loved what they saw at a time when they are having to mull a trade with one of their starting guards. The performance, if anything, would actually encourage Brooklyn to trade Irving as Thomas could fill in as a point guard.
