The game between the OKC Thunder and the LA Lakers definitely carried some significance in the NBA standings. Both teams are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs and both are in need of victories.
However, the game took on a greater historical significance on Tuesday because it was the first game where there was a real possibility that LeBron James might become the NBA’s all-time scoring record in regular-season games. Prior to Monday, the record had stood for almost 39 years but LeBron broke it on what truly was an accomplishment of the ages in the NBA.
As of halftime, LeBron James had 20 points in the game. He finished the game with 38 points, two more than he needed on the evening. LeBron James is now the all-time leading scorer in NBA history and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is No. 2.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in attendance at the Lakers/Thunder game, a part of a large group of dignitaries. He had held the record for almost 39 years, a former LA Laker himself. Abdul-Jabbar was a central part of the Lakers’ teams that competed and won championships with Magic Johnson at the point.
The result of the game went against Los Angeles. The OKC Thunder claimed a 133-130 victory. That was a result that gets them up to 11th spot in the west as they continue to flirt with the play-in tournament. The Lakers, meanwhile, are in 13th spot with 27 games remaining in their schedule.
