The Brooklyn Nets have struggled in recent weeks without Kevin Durant. There has been a reaction in the betting trends for Brooklyn and their antepost. As of late on January 27th, 2023, the Brooklyn Nets have a win total of 49.5 (bet365). That is a win total that was slashed by a full two games since we looked at the team several days ago.

Brooklyn Nets win total decreased

The UNDER side of the win total has been the more attractive side for weeks now. However, it is looking less and less attractive as the trends seemingly continue to favor the UNDER, and adjustments are made accordingly.

Those that backed Brooklyn earlier in the season have to be asking themselves: when will Kevin Durant return? It could actually be more than just a little while.

A few days ago Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Durant is on track with his recovery plan. However, KD will be re-evaluated again in two weeks’ time. Re-evaluation is one of those words that sports fans need to be thoughtful of. It’s best understood as the minimum time that it will take for Durant to return. When he gets looked at again there’s a chance that his return is delayed again. Furthermore, when he returns there’s a chance for re-injury.

Where do the Brooklyn Nets seem to be heading?

The Brooklyn Nets might still win the NBA title. They will almost definitely need Durant to help them do that. The team is 2-6 without him and they’ve lost to some bad teams. The Nets could be looking at a road series in the first round if their losing trends continue.

How many wins are the Nets likely to have this regular season? Based on their current winning percentage, you would expect 49-50 wins. Basically, the win total with bet365 has things forked from that point of view.

However, this is a team with a broad range because so much is hinging on one player and his return. Our projection for Brooklyn is 44 wins to 52 wins this season.

Short-term trends certainly don’t make this team look that good. The chart below needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Regardless, it’s clear that Brooklyn is more of a one-man show than anyone really realized. That makes them one thing in all ante-post markets: overrated. The best teams in the NBA do better than .250 basketball — even when their best player is out.
