All of a sudden there’s trouble in paradise. A bad situation in Boston has developed rapidly over the course of the last couple of days.

The Boston Celtics, the defending Eastern Conference champions heading into 2022/23, have some drama in the head-coaching position. Ime Udoka, who led the Celtics to the NBA Finals in his only season as a head coach in the NBA, has been suspended for the entire upcoming season.

NBA news: Ime Udoka to miss the season

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski headlined on September 21st, 2022: “Sources: Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka facing disciplinary action for relationship with member of franchise’s staff.” The meat of the news was that Udoka allegedly had a consensual but inappropriate relationship with a member of the Celtics’ staff. The buzz at the onset of the breaking news was that Udoka might miss the whole season. That has been confirmed as of late Thursday night.

Will the Boston Celtics still contend?

Now, what comes next on the basketball front?

Head coaches that are capable of leading a team on a deep run in the NBA playoffs are not easy to come by. The Celtics might be in a position where they would have to promote an assistant. But the smartest move would probably be to have Brad Stevens resume coaching responsibilities for at least the interim. He was the coach of Boston before coming President of Basketball Operations, his current job title.

The betting odds on the Celtics aren’t exactly shaking with this news. When we looked at their win total projection earlier this week, they were set at 55.5. That’s where they remain as of Thursday late night.

It looks like the Celtics just got handed a problem that could be expensive. However, the C’s will probably spend the money to fix the situation because they have the pieces in place for another successful season.
