The 2023 CDL Season start date has been officially revealed

For years, Call of Duty esports fans have argued against the long breaks in-between seasons. Every year, the off-season period lasts anything up to seven months, and it creates a massive rift between a new Call of Duty title launching and the esports season beginning. Now, owing to a drastic review of the structure ahead, the Call of Duty League 2023 season will begin on December 2nd, 2022. It’s the shortest break we’ve ever seen between seasons.

This means that fans will now be learning the ropes more or less alongside the professional players on the big screen. There will be just six weeks between the launch of Modern Warfare 2 and the commencement of the CDL 2023 season, meaning the game will be new and exciting for quite literally everybody involved. If there’s one key blocker to the success of the CDL, it’s that such a long break between seasons means that the hype simply dies down, as it did with Call of Duty: Vanguard.

CDL 2023 kicks off in 2022
In the 3-minute season trailer posted to YouTube, the Call of Duty League highlighted the schedule and format for the 2023 season. When the action begins in December, it’ll bring with it the first Major of the season, played between the 15th and 18th of the month. It’s a holiday season bonanza that re-introduces the Pro-Am format seen in the 2022 CDL season. At this event, held in Raleigh, NC, Challengers circuit teams will fight against CDL squads for a $500,000 prize pool.

Not only that, but the first Challengers Open of the season will also take place between the 16th and the 18th of December, in exactly the same location.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Call of Duty: Mobile Championship 2022 event will also be played in Raleigh, making it the first LAN CODM Championship in history. There’s a $1.7m prize pool on the line for that one, making it one of the biggest and most highly anticipated mobile esports tournaments of the year. It’s a triple-header that may just end up going down as the biggest single Call of Duty esports weekend ever.

For Major II, which will take place in 2023, Boston Breach will play host to the plethora of CDL organisations in the League. Then, at Major III, we’ll see an OpTic Texas event take place. At Major IV, the New York Subliners will be the hosting organisation, giving even more exposure to one of the most tenacious organisations in the League:

“NYXL is excited to host Major IV for the second year in Brooklyn, New York. We love the Call of Duty community and are going to be bigger, bolder, better, and louder, and give the fans the best experience in esports!”– James Frey, CEO of NYXL.

Finally, there’s Major V and the Championship weekend beyond. At present, no information is known about these events, but judging from what has been revealed so far, these will be top-tier events that are remembered for years to come. As we move into the Modern Warfare 2 season, players are preparing for the fact that this will be the platform of choice for the next two years, as no new Call of Duty game will launch in 2023.
