The newly advanced legislature for esports betting in Puerto Rico shall permit the wagering of esports in Enchantment Island.

Project 1534, a bill legalizing both in-person and online betting on traditional sports and esports, was signed by the outgoing Governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vásquez Garced. The plan is intended to amend the previous law to ‘enable new industries and companies to create jobs’ and ‘strengthen government programs and critical services through the development of new sources of income,’ according to a publication.

“I am extremely happy to sign the PS 1534 because it leads the business of sports and sports betting to support companies and jobs. This modification is going to complete and start a new industry that will generate thousands of jobs.”

Given the passage of the bill, more legislative votes must also be taken before formal implementation. The job now will be to enforce the latest sports and esports betting laws, Pedro Pierluisi, the new Governor of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico formally legalized sports betting, but sportsbooks were barred from being run on US territory due to a lack of official regulations. The 1534 project will allow punters, after registering in person at an existing retail betting facility, to legally wager on sports via mobiles and online. When the new legislature is formed, there is no official date of launch.
