PlayStation State of Play June 2022

PlayStation kicked off the  summer with a new State of Play. While the event did not bring any updates on the upcoming AAA owned titles, including God of War Ragnarok, it set the stage for what to expect as well from third party publishers in 2022.

PlayStation, the gaming division of Sony, has not only become one of the most recognizable video game brands but has been easily an industry leader for over two decades.

One of the most alluring factors behind the success of the brand is the well implemented third-party support. From the early days of the first edition PS1 to the recent ninth generation of consoles, the console family has had an amazing third-party support program providing multiple game hits throughout the years.

Sony set expectations quite high by announcing early on the show, that the State of Play will focus on third-party and PS VR2 titles. While the event did not bring a new God of War Ragnarok trailer, it brought some amazing announcements such as confirmation of Marvel’s Spider-Man heading to PC and the reveal of the Resident Evil 4 Remake.

After strong rumors for quite some time, Capcom officially announced the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Following the path set by Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake, Resident Evil 4 Remake reimagines the 2005 title and likely the most played out of them all.

As Resident Evil 4 was the first third-person over-the-shoulder gameplay game, it is expected to retain much more of its DNA as compared to RE2 and RE3 remakes. The game is expected to launch on March 3rd, 2023.

After the huge success of Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War thanks to their PC port, PlayStation PC brings another staple title to the platform, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. Something fans of the franchise were hoping for as Spider Man based games were constantly neglected on PC, with either really bad old school game ports or no ports at all. Set for an August 12th 2022 launch, the game will contain all of its original DLCs as well as implement PC-specific features. The official blog also confirms that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be adapted to PC.

After getting an extremely controversial logo reveal earlier in the year, Capcom showed off the new Street Fighter VI at the PlayStation State of Play, with a possible launch for 2023. Aside from the usual over the top fighting style, the game will feature a third-person sandbox adventure mode, based in a metropolitan city, a training dojo, and possibly run by missions to fight against NPCs.

For the last AAA game shown and announced we have Final Fantasy XVI. The showcase looked to end on a high note, with the gameplay reveal of Final Fantasy XVI. It showcased combat against a phoenix, titans, and other juggernaut opponents, similar to the combat style of FFXIV and FFXV. The game also has a release date of Summer 2023.

It is needless to say the presentation was a success to a community standard as it featured highly regarded gaming franchises. However most of these games were already expected, it was a matter of time and confirmation that they were going to be released around Summer 2023. Hopefully the hype and number of announcements will continue throughout the event.
