Going into the 2022 season, the Superliga will be more loaded than ever. The most anticipated team in both Scandinavia and Spain has been announced: Fnatic, a squad comprised of superstars from Canada, Spain, and Sweden.
Team Queso will be rebranded as Fnatic España. The players have expressed excitement about being able to play in their home country round the year instead of disparate tours with Superliga’s other teams.
Queso Antonio Rodríguez was quoted as saying “I’m very excited about our new partnership with Fnatic. We have been sending our players abroad for years when they could have played at home.”
What does this mean for Superliga? Well, without a doubt there will be some shakeups in the standings. The Superliga has been known for being a more competitive league ever since the merger of the Copa Atlas and Liga MX, but this is a whole new ballgame. It will be interesting to see how these new teams will do.
How this affects the USA’s hopes of getting a Wildcard spot is also subject to debate. This season will see Superliga with an unprecedented amount of talent and skill, and it may just send the USA team into a downward spiral.
The first match of the season will kick-off between the reigning champion C.F. Os Belenenses and newly minted club Fnatic España on August 18th. Superliga fans will see a new team, a new look of the league, and definitely a lot of excitement from here on out.
Nevertheless, it is exciting to see that Spain has kept up with the rest of the world in terms of eSports. It is only a matter of time before they become one of the bigger players in world eSports.
The following two teams were also announced: Portugal-based Celtic Boys and the Italian side Maledives Pride.
