The ‘Fortnite’ phenomenon took the eSports world by storm since its release back in 2017 and reached an impressive threshold in 2018. The popular video game earned the most annual revenue of any game in history last year, making $2.4bn according to SuperData. It’s obvious that the free-to-play games have become an excellent business model in terms of revenue over the past few years due to the in-game buying options. However, the Premium gaming is still playing a big part due to games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, FIFA or Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
Furthermore, it seems that Epic Games continues to go big in 2019 also. They have announced that will put up another $100 million in prize cash for official competitions in 2019. The Fortnite World Cup is the first Epic Games tournament of 2019, which will take place between July 26 – 28 in New York City. This means that the Fortnite players will have the chance to win a piece of the $30 million prize pool.
Epic Games have already announced the details of this huge event last Friday. There will be ten weekly online qualifiers open to every player that will run from April 13 to June 16. Epic Games will be doling out $1 million each week during these ten qualifiers. At the end of the qualification process, Epic Games will invite the top 100 solo players and the top 50 duo teams to participate at the Fortnite World Cup in New York. In addition, the weekly tournaments will continue after the end of the World Cup, along with the $1 million prize pools.

The good news is that the weekly tournaments, the qualifiers and even the Fortnite World Cup event are open to everyone. The eligible competitors must be at least 13 years of age, while players under 17 will need permission from a parent or legal guardian.
