Although these issues appear more in casual matches, the bugs have already caused controversy in professional championships such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Here are five situations where bugs have haunted Battle Royale tournaments.
Transparent wall (PUBG)
At the PUBG Invitational, held at the IEM Katowice 2018,OpTic Gaming lost $ 12,000 on account of cheating by a member of the team. The player caught in the act was Ian “Bahawaka” Crowe, who took advantage of a bug that made it possible to see through the wall when he disarmed in first person perspective.
Although he claimed that it was an accident, other professional players said it is very difficult to capitalize on this big without intending to. Therefore, OpTic was punished by getting their points stripped from that specific round. They ended up falling from the first to the fifth pace and didn’t receive any awards.
A bug gained popularity in the Fortnite Summer Skirmish finals, held in September 2018. In one of the games, the pro players who were still alive on the map began to fly. According to Epic Games, it was a very rare bug caused by the anti gravity fields on the map. Therefore, the developer chose to deactivate the fields in the other matches of the tournament and offered an extra match to the affected players.
No room to jump (Apex Legends)
During the Twitch Rivals, an Apex Legends tournament held in February 2019. Streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins was the target of a bug that left him trapped on the roof of a cave. The bug appeared when he made a leap and leaned against the stone wall in his path. He tried to move and change his weapons to try to get out of the situation, but only managed to escape when the ring closed and his legend died.
Shooting after getting Knocked Out (Apex Legends)
During Code Red Apex Legends, an entire team was killed because of a bug. The guilty player was Team Liquid’s Tanner “Rogue” Trebb. Initially he was knocked out, but after a few seconds, was able to fire his weapons. As a result, the AA side Rogue composed of Michael “Imaqtpie” Santana, Danny “Shiphtur” Le, and Marcus “Dyrus” Hill was taken out by the player who was technically eliminated. Nonetheless, the side still advanced to the next phase and Team Liquid was eliminated.
At the ESL Katowice Royale of Fortnite, the player “Marki” was affected by a immortal bug that ended up boosting his performance. Marki was initially knocked out by his opponent.
Knowing that there was nothing else to do, he dropped his mouse and keyboard. But when he paid attention to his knocked out character, he noticed that he could still move and that he had not died. When he realized the flaw that made him “invincible,” Marki continued to play normally.
